Elderly milk powder necessary?

DESPITE the various brands of milk powder on the market, experts say that healthy senior citizens on a balanced diet have no need for special formula.

That is the conclusion of the Consumer Council (消費者委員會), which tested 19 brands of milk powder aimed at the middle-aged and elderly.

Targeted health benefit claims advertised involve the presence of ingredients including Omega 3 and 6 fatty acids (奧米加3、6脂肪酸), prebiotics (益菌生), glucosamine (葡萄糖胺) and choline (膽鹼).

The council said the benefits of Omega 3 and 6 have been recognised by the European Union (歐洲聯盟).

But Consumer Council publicity and community relations chairman Michael Hui King-man (許敬文) said there are not enough or consistent clinical study results to prove that prebiotics are good for gut health, the immune system and calcium absorption, glucosamine good for joint health or that choline improves memory.

The samples studied also contained between 0.3 grams and 12 grams of fat per glass, while eight samples had added sugar.

Hui said consuming two to three glasses of milk made from powder with added sugars daily would increase the risk of weight gain and dental cavities.
