Happiness rising in Hong Kong

HONG Kong people are a lot happier than they were last year, with nearly three-quarters saying they expect to be even happier in the next six months.
In the Wofoo Social Enterprise (和富社會企業) happiness index survey, commissioned by HK.WeCare, 64 percent of the 1,302 people surveyed online between 16 and 29 September were happy with their lives, compared with 25 percent last year.
More than half agreed Hong Kong is “a place full of happiness”, up 27 percentage points from last year. Almost half said they had laughed out loud in the week before the survey. Only 8 percent said they had forgotten the last time they had a good laugh.
While most Hongkongers are optimistic, many are dissatisfied with the city’s political climate (74 percent), housing (71) and medical system (54).
Wofoo Social Enterprise attributed the contradictory findings to Hongkongers’ ability to make self-adjustments – as people become accustomed to the conditions in society they adjust themselves mentally to deal with the difficult situations in life.
The survey showed that 72 percent believed they would be even happier in the next six months and “believe there will be some positive changes”.
But the younger generation is less happy than the average person. A group spokesperson said young people understand some problems cannot be solved overnight. “All they want is an acknowledgement of their demands,” he said
