Country parks dropping bins
2017.10.13ALL rubbish bins in country parks will be removed by the year’s end, Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department director Leung Siu-fai (漁護署署長梁肇輝) said.
The department launched the ‘Take Your Litter Home’ programme in 2015, aimed at keeping country parks natural and to encourage people to develop the habit of taking their own rubbish away after visiting the park reserves.
Meanwhile, the government reduced the number of rubbish and recycling bins on hiking trails in phases. Following the fi rst two phases from September 2015 to July this year, the AFCD has decided to remove all remaining 257 rubbish and recycling bins on hiking trails by the end of this year.
Speaking after the hiking event celebrating the 40th anniversary of the establishment of the Tai Tam Country Park, Leung said the ‘Take Your Litter Home’ programme has progressed well, with waste in some country parks reduced by about 80 to 90 percent, and that there is no plan for the government to reinstall bins even if the measure was ineffective.
He said the government will step up publicity efforts and education measures so people will know they have to take their own rubbish away when they visit country parks in the future.
At the same event, Secretary for the Environment Wong Kam-sing (環境局局長黃錦星) also urged people to minimise the use of disposable items to reduce waste at the source, and take their litter home after hiking, as country parks are the SAR’s precious assets.
