New theme park in Hengqin: Hong Kong’s attractions not threatened, authorities say2013.11.12
A THEME park being developed on Hengqin (橫琴) island off Zhuhai (珠海) will not be a rival to Hong Kong Disneyland (香港迪士尼樂園).
Giving the assurance, the Hengqin New Area Administrative Committee (橫琴新區管理委員會) chief said the positioning of the park is different from Disneyland or Ocean Park.
Committee director Niu Jing (牛敬) added it could enrich the tourism resources of the special economic zone. “Apart from its location, its area and facilities are different as well,” he said. “There will be two big parks with a lot of motorised rides on either end of the HK-Zhuhai- Macau Bridge.”
Niu earlier said Disneyland management staff visited the new project. He was confident about the theme park opening next month.
Travel Industry Council (香港旅遊業議會) chairman Michael Wu Siu-ying (胡兆英) also feels the new theme park will not become a competitor to Hong Kong’s Disneyland.
“The park will only be another tour spot for visitors to Zhuhai,” Wu said. “Also, the new theme park is similar to Chimelong Paradise (長隆歡樂世界) in Guangzhou (廣州), and its location is convenient for domestic tourists since they will not need to cross the border.”
Wu added that many tourists choose a fourday travel package covering Hong Kong, Macau and Zhuhai. “The theme park would provide a new place for visitors to enjoy,” he said.
