BRAND new £20 banknotes, with a portrait of 19th-century artist JMW Turner, have been circulating in the UK since late February. Instead of paper, these new notes use a type of polymer.
Widely respected, Turner is said to be the UK’s greatest Romantic landscape artist. The previous £20 notes featured the 18th-century economist Adam Smith.
Sarah John, chief cashier of the Bank of England, said, “Moving the £20 note to polymer marks a major step forward in our fight against counterfeiting.” The different banks in the country have just finished adjusting to the new change, ie, making sure ATMs recognise the new notes.
