One million species nearly extinct UN report names human-related causes2019.05.15
IN early May, the United Nations released a scientific report that says one million species of living things are almost extinct. The report places the blame on five things that
humans are doing, which means humans are bringing about their own demise.
The report is 1,800 pages long, with a 39-page-long summary for policy makers. The writers are 145 experts from 50 countries. The current estimated number of species on Earth is
eight million, but the report says one million of them will go extinct in the next few decades.
The report details the five things that humans are doing wrong: cutting down forests for urban development, which means many species lose their homes; overfishing; widespread
use of fossil fuels, which speeds up climate change; polluting the land and waters; and allowing new species to force out local ones.
