Koalas coming to Hong Kong Australia gives eight cuddly bears as a gift2013.05.06
KOALA bears are a national symbol of Australia (澳洲). But you can now save yourself the trip to visit these cuddly creatures. Eight koalas are coming to Hong Kong! The South Australian government have confirmed they will give Hong Kong eight koala bears as a friendly gift. They will live in Ocean Park.
Starting a new life abroad is not an easy task, so they will not travel to Hong Kong at the same time. A spokesman for the park said they are still picking the right bears for Hong Kong. They will select the stronger ones. The first group of two to four koalas will arrive in August next year. After spending some time getting used to the environment, they will be ready to meet their Hong Kong fans at the end of the year.
The park needs to prepare for the koalas’ living and dietary habits. They will renovate facilities and build a house especially for the bears. As they mostly eat eucalyptus leaves (尤加利樹葉), the park has also planted some eucalyptus trees in Guangzhou (廣州) for them.
To prepare for taking care of the koalas, some park staff went to South Australia to learn about animal husbandry. They learnt medical care, animal breeding and nursing.
