Changes to Mong Kok traffic-free zones: Street performers vow to return on weekends

SIGNS have gone up at a Mong Kok pedestrian-only zone announcing that motor vehicles will be allowed greater access from January 20th.

Yau Tsim Mong district councillors voted 24-0 on November 21st to end the seven-day traffic-free zone at Sai Yeung Choi Street South. It follows many complaints from residents and shopkeepers. Street performers said signs, covered by plastic bags, have gone up telling the public of the move.

At the moment, a section of the road is closed to traffic from 4pm to 10pm Mondays to Saturdays. It is closed from noon to 10pm on Sundays and public holidays. In a week’s time, it will be closed to cars only from 4pm to 10pm on Saturdays, and noon to 10pm on Sundays and public holidays.

District council member Hau Wing-cheong said many residents want the government to implement the new rules before the Lunar New Year.

Street performers have expressed disappointment. They criticised the district council for not notifying them. They will perform elsewhere and return to Mong Kok on weekends and public holidays.
