Zoo struggles to keep koalas fed2020.06.22
Fewer tourists visit after Covid-19 spreads
DURING 2019, about 8,000 koalas in Australia (澳洲) died from bushfires.
A Sydney zoo dedicated to koalas said that while it was not hurt by the bushfires, it has fewer visitors these days due to Covid-19. They said thismeans they cannot afford to feed its koalas.
The zoo, Featherdale Wildlife Park (費瑟戴爾野生動物園), houses 50 koalas, and 70 percent of its income is from foreign tourists visiting. But the pandemic has greatly affected all businesses, and the zoo is no exception. The zoo said its koalas cannot survive in the wild.
And one year’s supply of food for one koala costs AU$19,000 (HK$100,000). The zoo said the only solution it can think of now is to ask for government help.
