Green group says medical waste hard to recycle

ACCORDING to the EnvironmentBureau (環保局), Hongkongers arethrowing away 4 to 6 million surgicalmasks per day. This amount equals 10 to 15 tonnes.

The green group Greeners Action (綠領行動) said thisis a shockingly large amount and people should usereusable masks instead.

The head of Greeners Action, Angus Ho Hon-wai (何漢威), said that since surgical masks are made withpolymer plastic, they are hard to recycle. In fact, somemight even become medical waste, which is harder todispose of. Wong Kam-sing (黃錦星), the Secretary forthe Environment, said this is why the government gaveout the cloth-based CuMasks – to reduce waste.
