AUNIVERSITY student has just been elected the mayor of a city north of Melbourne (墨爾本). She is the youngest mayor in the history of Australia (澳洲). Emilia Lisa Sterjova has been a city councillor for the town of Whittlesea since she was 19 years old.
Sterjova is currently studying for a bachelor’s degree in law and international relations at La Trobe University. During the election, she said she greatly supports community groups and will listen to the voices of young people.
At the same election, the town picked a 26-year-old, Alahna Desiato, to be the deputy mayor. This means that this city, for the first time in its history, will be led by two twenty-something women.
Sterjova said, “I hope to inspire others young people to realise age is not a barrier.”
