A glimpse of Chengdu’s pandas2018.05.30
THE local government of Sichuan (四川) province has been allowing the media to visit the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding (成都大熊貓繁育研究基地), which houses 180 pandas. Some of them are sent to various places, including Hong Kong and foreign countries, on loan according to their physical fitness.
A guide took journalists to the youngest panda at the base. It does not have a name yet because it is too young. Apliu – ‘duck shed’. The names usually have something to do with the mother, as panda fathers mostly ignore their offspring.
Although most people find plumper pandas cuter, the guide said since pandas are lazy, eg, refusing to sit when they can lie down, their keepers would put their food in hard-to-reach places so that the pandas would have to move around to get it.
