THE Australian (澳洲) government announced in late April that it is setting aside A$500 million (HK$2.97 billion) for the conservation of the Great Barrier Reef (大堡礁). The funds will go to helping farmers clean up their waste and improve the water quality, as well as protecting the corals from starfishes.
The ocean’s water temperatures have risen due to climate change, which led to the corals being bleached. In addition, the farm waste is washed into the seas, which causes the number of starfishes to rise, which in turn threatens the Reef.
The prime minister of Australia, Malcolm Turnbull, said that the money will go to improving the water quality so as to counter the natural enemies of the Reef, and boost efforts to renew the corals.
