MILK tea (奶茶) , pineapple buns, Cantonese and tai chi( 太極) have made it on Hong Kong’s first Intangible Heritage List. The list has 480 items under five groups.
A study to make the list began in 2009 and was completed last year. The Intangible Cultural Heritage Advisory Committee (非物質文化遺產諮詢委員) then handed the list to the government.
The government said the list will be updated regularly. It will also carry out research, preservation and promotion for items on the list.
Cantonese belongs to the ‘oral traditions and expressions’ group. Kung fu (功夫), such as Tai Chi and Wing Chun (詠春), are included in ‘social practices, rituals and festive events’. Lion and fire dragon dances, and ribbon dance belong to ‘performing arts’.
Methods of making Hong Kong-style food are in the ‘traditional craftsmanship’ group. It includes egg tarts, pineapple buns, milk tea and maltose candy (啄啄糖). Traditional Chinese medicine goes under ‘knowledge and practices concerning nature and the universe’.
