Protect your hearing while using earphones2017.04.21
MANY Hongkongers use earphones to listen to music, watch videos or even play games on their portable devices. Sometimes the volume is so high that even other people can hear. Dr Dennis Au Kin-kwok (區建國) of Hong Kong Sanatorium & Hospital (養和醫院) advises against this practice.
Au said that hearing loss is based on factors including volume, how much time you listen to the sound, and pitch. For example, if a noise is at 90 decibels, people can only listen to it for eight hours before their hearing is damaged. But if the noise is louder, the time period will shorten. Au added that headphones are better than earbuds because the latter might not fit everyone’s ears, leading to people turning up the volume.
