CARRIE Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor (林鄭月娥), the former Chief Secretary for Administration (政務司司長), won the Hong Kong Chief Executive (CE, 香港行政長官) election after receiving 777 votes. She said she plans to unite Hong Kong amid the many divisions in society and hire talented people across party lines.

In the 26 March election, 1,186 Election Committee (選舉委員會) members voted at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre in Wan Chai. Lam was widely expected to win as she was Beijing’s preferred candidate. Former Financial Secretary John Tsang Chun-wah (曾俊華) received 365 votes and former judge Woo Kwok-hing (胡國興) got 21.

As the first female CE-designate, Lam will be succeeding Leung Chun-ying (梁振英) in July. She first joined the HKSAR government 36 years ago and became the Chief Secretary for Administration in 2012. During her election campaign, she pledged to increase education spending by HK$5 billion.
