HONG Kong youngsters will have a chance to work in Sichuan’s panda reserve and Beijing’s Palace Museum as the SAR celebrates the handover’s 20th anniversary, Chief Secretary Matthew Cheung Kin-chung (政務司司長張建宗) said.

The government will sponsor 7,200 youngsters for exchanges in Guangdong province this year, and another 1,480 for internships next year.

In his blog, Cheung talked about the government’s delegation to Guangzhou last month, and how Hong Kong and Guangdong can complement each other for mutual benefits.

Cheung said two student programmes – the Sichuan Wolong Natural Reserve Internship Programme (四川臥龍自然保護區青年實習計劃), and Beijing Palace Museum Conservation Internship Programme (北京故宮博物院青年實習計劃) – will be available for youngsters this summer.

“Apart from gaining conservation knowledge, the internships will also promote understanding between young people from both locations,” Cheung wrote.

He said the government’s Funding Scheme for Youth Exchange in the Mainland (青年內地交流資助計劃) provides funds for community groups to run exchange programmes in the mainland. The Funding Scheme for Youth Internship in the Mainland (青年內地實習資助計劃) meanwhile allows youngsters to work as interns in the mainland to learn about the job market, working culture and development opportunities there.
