MANY people were shocked last week after billionaire Donald Trump defeated Hillary Clinton in the US presidential election. Opinion polls had predicted victory for Clinton, who is from the Democratic Party. So people were amazed when Trump, a Republican, ended up as the winner.

The election came after a long and bitter campaign which began almost two years ago. On election day, they each secured about 59 million ballots in the popular vote. But Trump was declared president-elect because he won according to the voting system the US uses.

Both Trump and Clinton have called for unity. President Barack Obama urged the country to rally behind his successor.
