Litterbugs create a mess in country parks

THE environmental organisation Green Power has found that many visitors to country parks leave a lot of rubbish behind.

The group interviewed 315 people between September and October in a survey on waste in country parks. All those who took part in the study admitted to creating rubbish while inside a country park.

Tissue and paper towels were discarded by 70 percent of the respondents. Sixty-four percent also admitted to throwing away food packages and 47 percent left behind plastic bags. And 40 percent of those questioned said they threw away fruit peel and plastic bottles.

The government is planning to remove rubbish bins in country parks to encourage visitors to take their rubbish home. Green Power suggested that people use towels instead of tissue, bring their own bottles and food containers, and produce less waste.

Many people are under the false impression that they can throw away fruit peel willy-nilly because it is biodegradable. But it takes a long time for fruit peel to decompose and wild animals might eat it.
