HUNDREDS of cyclists pedalled 11 kilometres along the harbourfront between Kennedy Town (堅尼地城) and Quarry Bay (鰂魚涌) in a rally to push the government to build a waterfront cycle path on Hong Kong Island.

The SAR is “way behind” the rest of the world in fostering a bicycle-friendly environment, they said, and a well-connected cycle path between Kennedy Town and Shau Kei Wan (筲箕灣) is needed.

Joining the three-hour demonstration - which started at 11am from Sai Ning Street (西寧街), Kennedy Town, and ended on Hoi Yu Street (海裕街) in Quarry Bay - were lawmakers Edward Yiu Chung-yim (姚松炎), Nathan Law Kwun-chung (羅冠聰) and Ted Hui Chi-fung (許智峯).

The 340-strong group, which made stops in Central and North Point Pier, handed in a petition to the Civil Engineering and Development Department (土木工程拓展署) in North Point, demanding that the government build the cycleway underneath the Island Eastern Corridor (東區走廊).

A public consultation on a proposed two-kilometre boardwalk underneath the Island Eastern Corridor in North Point, possibly with a waterfront cycling path, was due to end on 28 January.

Martin Turner, chairman of the Hong Kong Cycling Alliance (香港單車同盟), an organiser of the rally, said although the plan would be “useful and enjoyable”, “it’s only the first step.” Yiu said it is “totally feasible” to build a cycling path along the northern shore of Hong Kong Island.
