THE University of Hong Kong’s (香港大學) faculty of dentistry (牙醫學院) has been rated as the best in the world, according to the latest rankings.
The QS World University Rankings (QS世界大學學科排名), an annual publication of university rankings by Quacquarelli Symonds, saw HKU advancing from second last year, knocking off Sweden’s Karolinska Institute (卡羅琳醫學院) at the top.
HKU Faculty of Dentistry dean Thomas Frank Flemmig (傅立明) said it was a fantastic result.
“It is a wonderful recognition of the hard work and academic contributions of both our staff and students. They have done a fabulous job,” he said.
Flemmig said the faculty is planning for significant growth in the next few years.
“In order to address the shortage of dentists in Hong Kong, we will take in more undergraduate students. There will be an approximate 40 percent increase in the number of students admitted to the bachelor of dental surgery programme in the fall of this year,” he said.
HKU also placed in the top ten for education (sixth), civil and structural engineering (ninth), mineral and mining engineering (ninth), linguistics (10th) and social policy and administration (10th).
An HKU spokeswoman said the university will continue to strive to provide quality education for students and to achieve excellence and innovation.
“Although we are delighted that we are number one in dentistry and in the top 10 in five more subjects, we would like to point out that the choice of ranking criteria and methodologies may vary significantly from one league table to the next ... different university ranking systems should be viewed with a degree of ambivalence,” the spokeswoman said.
