MTR Corp Ltd (MTRC) announced on the seventh day of the Lunar New Year an ‘everyone’s birthday’ gift.
The ‘Happy Birthday – Happy Journey’ (開心搭．生日獎) is a promotional lucky draw that allows 200,000 Hongkongers to win prizes on their birthday month.
A lucky draw will be held every month from March to draw a birthday date. Hong Kong ID cardholders whose birthdays fall on the date drawn can redeem the special ‘birthday pack’ by presenting their ID card.
The pack will include a ‘Happy Birthday Oneday Pass’ for one day of unlimited free domestic rides on the MTR.
Excluded from the free rides are the Airport Express, East Rail Line first class, journeys to and from Lo Wu and Lok Ma Chau, and MTR buses.
In addition to the one-day pass, coupons are also given to the winners. These comprise a HK$50 MTR malls gift voucher, HK$20 for Maxim’s cakes and HK$100 Maxim’s Chinese cuisine dinner vouchers.
But commuters are generally indifferent to the programme, labelling it a gimmick. Education worker Tracy Leung Wan said: “The programme is not very practical. I hope the MTRC will launch more practical measures that benefit passengers, such as reduction of fares or the reintroduction of the 10 percent same-day, second-trip discount.”
The first lucky draw will be made on 22 March for a lucky April birthday.
