PASSENGERS may carry certain oversized musical instruments on MTR trains during non-rush hours starting November.

The MTR Corp Limited (MTRC, 港鐵公司) has relaxed size restrictions for musical instruments and has allowed them on trains after a public outcry.

But those travelling with large instruments need to apply for a permit first under the four-month trial scheme.

Instruments in a box or bag falling within the relaxed size limit can be taken on trains all day, except between 8.15am and 9.15am, Monday to Friday.

There will be no time restriction on public holidays.

The new size limits for musical instruments are 235 cm for total dimensions and 145 cm for any one side, including the case. The current corresponding limits for all other luggage are 170 cm and 130 cm.

The MTRC said the decision to relax the restrictions took into account safety concerns and the needs of passengers.

Details of the scheme were uploaded to MTRC’s website.

Application forms can be downloaded and submitted online, or applicants can drop them in collection boxes at stations or send them by post.

If the applicant is under the age of 18, a parent or guardian must sign a “statement of consent”.

The trial scheme will be reviewed towards the end of the four-month period, when changes or adjustments may be made.
