THE government has grand plans for Lantau. Secretary for Development Paul Chan Mopo (發展局局長陳茂波)
said the island will be the focus of development in the next 10 years.

He said Hong Kong’s economic development has been concentrating on both sides of Victoria Harbour. Now is
Lantau’s turn.

“Lantau Island is a bright pearl,” he said. “There are now different infrastructures being constructed on Lantau
Island. I hope its future will be better.”

Chan was speaking at the Lantau Development Forum, organised by Sing Tao News Corp.

The seminar was on the potential opportunities for economic and social development on the island.

As part of the development, an artificial island will be built between Hong Kong Island and Lantau.

The new island will house boundary-crossing facilities for the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge (港珠澳大橋).

It can also provide “more places for people to live as well as more working opportunities,” Chan said.

Housing Society Chairman Marco Wu Moon-hoi said that, in planning the use of land, “we cannot build only large
shopping malls”. Development must be balanced, he added.

Islands District Council Vice Chairman Chau Chuenheung said Lantau should develop cultural tourism. “Lantau
Island has over 6,000 years’ history,” Chau said, adding more could be done to promote this.

And using the example of the old Tai O police station, Chau said revitalisation can help develop the local economy.
