BRITAIN’S (英國) Prince William (威廉王子) and the Duchess of Cambridge (劍橋公爵夫人) have named their daughter Charlotte Elizabeth Diana (夏洛特.伊利沙伯.戴安娜), a choice that honours the baby’s late grandmother Diana, Princess of Wales (戴安娜王妃), and her great-grandmother Queen Elizabeth II (伊利沙伯女王).

The news, announced in a statement on Monday from the couple’s Kensington Palace (肯辛頓宮 ) residence, was eagerly awaited by royal watchers and bookmakers who had been placing bets and speculating on the subject since the baby’s birth on Saturday.

Charlotte, fourth in line to the British (英國的) throne behind her brother Prince George (喬治王子), father William and grandfather Prince Charles (查理斯王子), was born on 2 May in a London (倫敦) hospital. The family have now returned to their home on the Queen’s Sandringham Estate.

The birth has provided a welcome distraction for many Britons (英國人) from campaigning by political parties for yesterday’s knife-edge general election.

Many newspapers have devoted reams of newsprint to the royal birth, pushing political coverage off the front pages.

Others were less enthusiastic. The Independent newspaper published a list of stories it said had been edged out by the royal news. “Away from the ... birth of the Princess of Cambridge (劍橋公主), however, the rest of the world has continued,” it wrote.
