DOCTORS, nurses and others fighting Ebola (伊波拉) have been named Time’s (《時代雜誌》) 2014 Person of the Year (年度風雲人物 ), the magazine announced last Wednesday.
The runners-up included protesters from Ferguson (弗格森) in Missouri (密蘇里州); Russian (俄羅斯的) President Vladimir Putin (普京); Kurdish (庫爾德的) Regional Government President Massoud Barzani (巴爾扎尼); and Jack Ma (馬雲), the China -based founder of e-commerce giant Alibaba (阿里巴巴).
In an article on the Time website, Editor Nancy Gibbs praised “the people in the field, the special forces of Doctors Without Borders/Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF, 無國界醫生), the Christian medical-relief workers of Samaritan’s Purse (撒馬利亞救援會) and many others from all over the world” who “fought side by side with local doctors and nurses, ambulance drivers and burial teams”.
Gibbs noted that the disease also struck doctors and nurses.
“The rest of the world can sleep at night because a group of men and women are willing to stand and fight,” she wrote. “For tireless acts of courage and mercy, for buying the world time to boost its defences, for risking, for persisting, for sacrificing and saving, the Ebola fighters are Time’s 2014 Person of the Year.”
Pope Francis (教宗方濟各) was last year’s person of the year.
