Dismay over Kai Tak terminal use 2014.10.31
744 744

LAWMAKERS are unhappy that the Kai Tak Cruise Terminal (啟德郵輪碼頭) is underused and will remain so for a time.

Next year, 55 vessels will dock at the terminal, almost double the expected 28 this year. But several lawmakers said the figure is too low and asked the government to study how to attract more passenger liners.

Former Liberal Party (自由黨 ) leader James Tien Pei-chun (田北俊), who was also the former head of the Tourism Board (旅遊發展局), said the figures are far below his projections. He suggested support facilities should be enhanced so more ships may go to the cruise terminal.

The terminal was originally designed to attract more ships and tourists to Hong Kong but it has now turned into a place for Hongkongers, Tien added.

Commissioner for Tourism (旅遊事務專員) Philip Yung Wai-hung (容偉雄) said the terminal aims to be the main cruise hub in Asia (亞洲), adding its operator will continue to learn from the experience of others and make improvements. An international company will finish building cruise ships in one to two years and plans to use Kai Tak Cruise Terminal as its home port, which will help strengthen Hong Kong’s status.

He said co-operation will be strengthened with ports in the mainland, Taiwan (台灣) and other locations in Asia to encourage more ships to visit.
