New buffalo in Mai Po Shorter grass from grazing attracts birds 2012.09.24

NEW buffalo has been added into Mai Po Nature Reserve (米埔自然保護區).

World Wide Fund for Nature Hong Kong (WWF HK, 世界自然基金會香港分會) already has two buffaloes in the reserve as part of their pioneering research project on buffalo grazing. The two buffaloes, named Siu Mai and Wo Muk, were added in 2006 and 2009 respectively. After the second buffalo, Wo Muk, was added, the grass in the grazing area became shorter. Shorter grass attracts a greater variety of birds to the grazing site.

One more buffalo has been added to the reserve to help expand the grazing area. This new addition is financially supported by the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department (AFCD, 漁農自然護理處). WWF plans to keep adding buffaloes to the area over the next 12 months. Its aim is to increase the number of buffalos to at least five.

WWF is holding a naming competition for the new buffalo. Visit wwf.org.hk/walkfornature/ buffalo for details and rules.
