Survey: one in four students addicted to the Net 2013.08.05
296 296

THE Internet is fun and convenient to use, but we need to be careful not to get addicted to it. A local survey has revealed that more than 26 percent of students are ‘netaholics’ – people who are addicted to the Internet.

Surveyors interviewed over 3,500 Form 2 students. It asked them to evaluate themselves on ten symptoms of Internet addiction. They were said to be netaholics when they had at least four symptoms.

For example, they would feel depressed after going offline, or feel anxious when they tried to reduce their time online. They might also refuse to let their families know how much time they spent in front of the computer, or even believe the Internet is more important than their studies and families.

Internet addiction could be bad for children’s health, the Centre for Health Protection (衛生防護中心) says. They may skip meals and stay up late to play online games.
