A 16-YEAR-OLD male polar bear died of starvation on the Arctic island of Svalbard in July. The giant animal starved to death because of the lack of ice for him to hunt seals.
Pictures of the bear lying dead and looking like a rug shocked many across the world. He was all skin and bones as there was not much fat left in his body.
Before his death, the polar bear had been searching for food for a very long time. Polar bears feed mostly on seals and they depend on sea ice to capture their prey. But the level of sea ice in the Arctic dropped to the lowest level on record last year. After walking for more than 500 kilometres of the island for four months, the polar bear still could not find a single seal to eat. Sadly, he was starved to death before he could feed himself.
