A 13-YEAR-OLD Hong Kong girl has been offered places in three top British universities. Zhao Zhi-yau (趙芷悠) was brought up in an ordinary family. At just 12, she achieved four A grades in her GCSEs. Seeing her great achievement, University of St. Andrews, University of Manchester and King’s College London all offered her a place to study science-related subjects.
Zhao’s parents encouraged her to take the initiative to seek knowledge from reading since she was small. When she was 10, she began reading the American TIME magazine and American novels. Zhao said she finds reading enjoyable and she wants to be a doctor in an accident and emergency unit in the future. She believes she is able to handle tasks even under stressful environments. She also thinks being a doctor is a meaningful job as it can help people in need.
Zhao started studying at an international school after Primary 4. She says the school environment there is very different and she has more spare time to do the things that she likes, such as reading. She encourages others to read TIME magazine because it is inspiring.
