THE Shanghai city government released a list of centenarians in 2019. As of 30 September, there are 2,657 people who have an age of 100 years or older. Song Honggen, aged 110, and Xu Suzhen, aged 112, are respectively the oldest man and woman in the city.
Shanghai is the first city in China to have a population so old. Currently, over one-third of its residents are elderly. According to government statistics, the number of seniors in Shanghai has reached 5.03 million, which is 34.4 percent of all the people in Shanghai.
Twenty-five percent of the centenarians are men and 75 percent are women. Eighty-three percent of these elderly people are aged 100 to 102, 14.5 percent are aged 103 to 105, and 2.5 percent are aged 106 and above.
