THE government is shutting down a beach at Lamma Island (南丫島) from June to October. This is because that location is the only place in Hong Kong where green sea turtles lay their eggs.
About 0.5 hectare of the Sham Wan beach (深灣) will be shut down. To keep the area off limits, the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department (AFCD, 漁護署) is currently patrolling the beach. Anyone caught breaking the rules can be fined up to HK$50,000.
The government will also restrict ships in nearby waters to a lower speed, so that the waves will not bother the turtles and their eggs. According to the AFCD, each turtle usually lays about 100 eggs each time.
