Browsing social media seems harmless, but many websites and apps collect personal data in the process. For example, they can find out an user’s preferences from their “likes”. To protect children’s privacy, the information office in the UK has recently proposed that social media sites like facebook should keep children from “liking” things on the sites. Under the law, social media companies will have to put children’s accounts at a high privacy mode as the default, and also set up an age verification system. Those who break the law will be fined. Such a law would be the first of its kind worldwide.
