RECENTLY, the Environmental Protection Department (EPD, 環保署) found that the number of plastic bags going to landfills has risen to 4.4 billion in 2017, or 3 percent higher than 2016.
The EPD said that the kind of bags given out most often is the transparent one for raw meat, etc. Since there is no plastic bag fee for these, people are using 680 million of them per year.
Green groups are asking stores to stop handing out these bags and for people to bring their own.
Back when the plastic bag fee first came into effect in 2009, the number of regular plastic bags being thrown away dropped from 657 million to 153 million. But afterwards, the number started rising again. Some people blame supermarkets since some stores give out transparent bags with no handles to replace regular plastic bags.
