ON 2 January, the Controller for the Centre for Health Protection, Wong Ka-hing (衛生防護中心總監黃加慶), announced that Hong Kong had entered the winter peak flu season. This is one week earlier than past years.
Wong pointed out that 14 percent of all patients tested have the flu, when the normal rate is 10.7 percent. And four people out of every 10,000 have to be admitted into hospital, higher than the normal two per 10,000.
Wong added that the most widespread flu type this year is the H1 type, and will affect newborns to children aged five the most, so kindergarteners are suffering the worst. Fortunately, over 960,000 people have taken the flu vaccine, which is 50 percent more than the last winter.
