MANY green groups, such as Greenpeace, joined together to ask Hong Kong Shue Yan University (香港樹仁大學) to conduct a survey on waste disposal fees. According to the survey, 83.3 percent of those making less than HK$10,000 per month and 85.5 percent of those living in public housing support fees for waste disposal.
The green groups said the results of the survey, which questioned 1,005 people, show that grassroots Hongkongers also care about the environment. Most respondents, poor or not, agree with the principle of ‘the polluter pays’.
Eighty-six percent of people who live in private housing support waste disposal fees. This means the fee has city-wide support. And the government has said that it will subsidise some of the fees for assistance-receiving residents.
