Chang’e-4 probe successfully launched Spacecraft to land on Moon’s far side 2018.12.19
20197 20197

ON 8 December, the Xichang Satellite Launch Centre (西昌衛星發射中心) used the Long March 3 (長征三號) rocket to successfully launch the probe Chang’e-4 (嫦娥四號). The spacecraft will get to the Moon around January 2019 and will orbit around it before softly landing on the side facing away from Earth.
This mission has two exploration goals. The first one is to release a relay satellite, Magpie Bridge (鵲橋), which enables communication between Earth and the far side of the Moon. The second one is to send a lander to that region.
As for scientific research, the main goals are to set up a low frequency array on this side of the Moon to study space, the surface and mineral composition around the landing area, and how much neutron radiation, etc, that side of the moon gets.
