THE waste company Secure Information Disposal Services Ltd (SSID, 資訊機密處理有限公司) recently spent HK$10 million, including HK$3 million in government grant money, to open a drink carton recycling plant in Yuen Long (元朗).
As the first recycler of drink cartons in the city, SSID will be able to handle 10 tonnes of these cartons daily. After breaking them down into pulp, SSID will send the material up to mainland China. The pulp will be made into paper towels and napkins, and then sold back to Hong Kong.
SSID said its biggest challenge is to find a way to take the cartons from different communities. It hopes that afterthe government starts charging for waste disposal, people will be keener to recycle drink cartons.
