THE Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge (港珠澳大橋) is now open for service, following a declaration from President Xi Jinping (習近平) during the opening ceremony in Zhuhai. Xi also went up to the observation deck on the west side and met with the manager of the bridge and the construction crew.
Xi praised the bridge for breaking many records, including the longest sea bridge ever built. He added that it will be very important to the Greater Bay Area (大灣區), which includes the three cities, as well as Guangzhou (廣州) and Shenzhen (深圳).
Before Xi went up, various officials delivered speeches, including Hong Kong Chief Executive Carrie Lam Cheng Yuetngor (香港行政長官林鄭月娥). Lam pointed out that the bridge’s entry point for Hong Kong is on Lantau Island, which will help with the plan to reclaim land to expand Lantau in the future.
