New solar-powered buses use less fuel Interior temperature lower by 10 degrees2018.10.15
KOWLOON Motor Bus (KMB, 九巴) has recently developed the second generation of its solar-powered double-decker buses. The number of solar panels on top of the buses’ roofs has increased from 20 to 28, which means they can generate 54 percent more energy.
The electricity produced by the panels can be used by the ventilation system, which means the starting temperature inside the buses will be eight to 10 degrees cooler. Because this electricity goes straight to the fans, the buses use 3 percent less fuel than first generation buses.
KMB said the solar-powered generators have been approved by the Transport Department (運輸署). These buses will begin service in the second half of 2019.
