A GREEN group has recently found that 63 percent of locals use plastic bags to keep their umbrellas from dripping. Of the people who use these bags, 60 percent of them throw the bags away afterwards.
Greeners Action (綠領行動) questioned locals from July to August, 2018; of the 867 respondents, 63 percent use these bags, and half throw them away afterwards. Seventytwo percent of the bag users also said they knew these bags were not environmentally friendly.
According to a 2016 report from the Environmental Protection Department (環保署), 14 million umbrella bags are sent to landfills every year. Greeners Action asked the government to change laws and charge fees for the bags.
