IN early June, Green Earth (綠惜地球) stated that it welcomes Hong Kong government’s efforts to reduce plastic waste. It pointed out that 2,132 tonnes of plastic waste was thrown away in 2016 but only 14 percent was recycled.
Edwin Lau (劉祉鋒), executive director of Green Earth, explained that elsewhere, tactics like rewarding people for returning bottles seem to work. The group has helped installed such smart recycling machines in a Sheung Shui (上水) mall last year, which have been a success.
The group also urges the government to set up a centralized plastic recycling system and install more smart recycling machines throughout all 18 districts. The group plans to install related recycling equipment at Fo Tan (火炭) MTR station by the end of June.
