Carly Lam Siu-yin (林小燕), To Chi-ho(杜嗣河) and their team at Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU, 香港理工大學) have developed a new kind of lens, which will be released in June.
These new lenses use a new technology: defocus incorporated multiple segments (Dims, 多區正向光學離焦). They put the image a little in front of the retina, so that the eyeball will not get stretched as quickly – a longer eyeball means the person develops short-sightedness.
In the past three years, the lenses were tested on 160 children aged eight to 13. The eyesight of over 20 percent of the test group stayed the same, and for children whose eyes got worse, they did so at a rate that is 60 percent slower.
