MTRC announced in late March that it will increase its fares by 3.14 percent in June. Crossing the harbour from urban areas will presumably cost about 30 to 40 cents more using the Octopus Card. Going from the New Territories (新界) to downtown will probably cost about 50 to 80 cents more.
Ever since fare adjustments were introduced, MTR ticket prices have increased every year during 2010 to 2016. The MTRC gave out a 10 percent discount in 2017, but it said that it will increase ticket prices in 2018 because it is paying more wages to its workers. When meeting the press, the MTRC’s chairman Frederick Ma Si-hang (馬時亨) also mentioned a 3 percent discount to all passengers
