THE Hong Kong Observation Wheel (香港摩天輪) should be turning again with a new operator before year’s end at HK$20 a ride compared to the previous charge of HK$100.
Michael Denmark, chief executive of Entertainment Corp, said the HK$20 price for adults is not a “short-term promotion” but will apply throughout a three-year contract period.
Denmark also said children under three will ride for free and there will also be a discount for the elderly. “This is not an opening promotion,” he said. “I see it as a gift.”
Denmark said the company is working to re-open the wheel in December with the name of its major sponsor, insurance giant AIA Group, prominent. The exact opening date will be announced within weeks.
Tourism sector lawmaker Yiu Si-wing (姚思榮) said the reduced price is welcome for people wanting to see Victoria Harbour from up high and close. But he is worried queues will be long.
Big crowds could be expected at weekends or during peak travel seasons, Yiu added, so hiking prices at such times could keep numbers manageable.
The wheel is 60 metres high with 42 gondolas that can each hold eight to ten people. And a session lasts for 15 to 20 minutes. Asked about queues and pricing, Denmark said a booking service will be offered to keep queues reasonable.
And to cover the HK$1.5 million monthly rent, Entertainment Corp and AIA will have events on the Central site to keep it vibrant year-round.
