THE World Meteorological Organization(WMO, 聯合國世界氣象組織) said on 30 October that the level of one of the greenhouse gases, carbon dioxide (二氧化碳), has reached a new high. Countries around the world need serious efforts to lower the amount of the gas if they want to follow the guidelines in the Paris (巴黎) climate change agreement.
The WMO releases a report about greenhouse gases each year. And this year, the report said the 2016 level of carbon dioxide in the air was the highest ever. This might cause the sea level to rise two metres and the temperature to increase by three degrees Celsius.
The report explained that the last time there was so much carbon dioxide in the air was 3 to 5 million years ago. That is when the temperature was two to three degrees higher.
