THE University of Hong Kong is offering a free online course on Hong Kong movies and Through a Global Lens examines how local films have gone on to form part of global popular culture. It commenced on 7 February for a six-week run.

The course content includes watching various movies, including some starring Jackie Chan Kong-sang (成龍) and Bruce Lee (李小龍), migration melodrama An Autumn's Tale (秋天的童話), thriller The Killer (喋血雙雄) by John Woo (吳宇森), cop story Infernal Affairs (無間道) and In the Mood for Love (花樣年華) by Wong Kar-wai (王家衛).

Famous Hong Kong directors, including Mabel Cheung Yuen-ting (張婉婷) and Andrew Lau Wai-keung (劉偉強), will share their insights with students.

There will be demonstrations of martial arts choreography, analysis of .lm techniques and a look into issues explored in the movies such as gender, race and migration. It also looks at how some films connect Hong Kong to the world.

Gina Marchettid, a professor in the department of comparative literature, talks about how Hong Kong has been portrayed in Hollywood productions.

The university has also launched a free course about dinosaurs. Dinosaur Ecosystems runs for six weeks with two to three hours of content a week.

Dinosaurs “have captivated us in movies and newspaper headlines,” said Michael Pittman, a vertebrate paleontologist in the department of earth sciences.
