AFTER years of waiting, Whampoa Garden residents finally got an MTR station as part of the Kwun Tong Line extension.
Whampoa (黃埔) station began operations on 23 October. Railway fans rushed in after MTR Corporation chief executive officer Lincoln Leong Kwok-kuen opened the gates to the station at around 6am.
Local officials and other MTR executives joined Leong for the opening ceremony on the boarding platform. Then everyone present boarded the first train. Leung took a selfie with officials and MTR fans.
The train stopped shortly after it began moving, but everything returned to normal after a few seconds. MTR operations director Adi Lau Tin-shing appealed to the public for patience and tolerance as the railway firm resolves the teething problems.
Lau pointed out that there were more than 2,600 passengers in the first two hours after Whampoa and Ho Man Tin (何文田) stations opened. He predicted that interchange stations, including Admiralty (金鐘) and Mong Kok, will be even busier.
