MANGO pomelo sago dessert was found to have the highest average sugar level — 11 grams per 100g — of all the traditional Cantonese desserts sold in Hong Kong. The Consumer Council tested 10 kinds of Cantonese desserts from shops across the city. More than 50 of the 100 samples contained at least half the recommended daily sugar intake of 50 grams.
Mung bean soup from one store in Central had the highest sugar level, at 13g per 100g. Nutritionists say that too much sugar may lead to high blood pressure, heart diseases and diabetes. They recommend lowering the sugar content or serving the syrup separately. People should also consume fewer carbohydrates if they want to have dessert.
